A witty and opinionated look at the cool, in-control side of Joni Mitchell, featuring songs from the 1930s through the 1990s backed by a jazz trio of piano, bass, and viola. Because who doesn’t think of viola when they think of Joni Mitchell songs?
Elaine St.George specializes in reinventing the classics of pop. It's just that her definition of "pop" encompasses everything from Gershwin and Cole Porter -- who wrote the popular music of the 1930s -- to Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen and a host of newer songwriters.
Backed by musical director Ross Patterson and some of the best jazz musicians in the business, St. George combines consummate musicality with an ability to get right to the heart of a lyric, producing a unique emotional experience for her audience. Critic Roy Sander wrote: “I've never known her simply to choose a good song and merely sing it well; rather, she approaches each song purposefully, with a distinctive point of view.” (BistroAwards.com)
St. George has been called “a showstopping songstress” (New York) and “a distinctly hip performer” (Bay Windows). Time Out New York declared, “Barbara Cook and Elaine St. George must have been separated at birth. St. George hits the same gorgeous, shimmery notes as the grande dame of cabaret.”
